Sedation

3 questions to help you conquer your fear of the dentist

Does the thought of seeing the dentist make you feel fearful, anxious, phobic, scared, nervous, ill?

One in four patients are afraid of visiting the dentist, British Dental Association research suggests.

There could be many reasons for your anxiety. Maybe it’s the sights and sounds, bright lights, needles, metal instruments, drilling.

Maybe you’ve had a painful experience. Or maybe you just can’t stand the thought of a visit to the dentist.

At Lotus Clinic we’ve seen it all before. We’ve got vast experience of helping patients like you deal with their fear.

But can we help you?

To find out, ask yourself these 3 questions

1. Would you like to take the stress out of visiting the dentist?
2. Are you ready to feel confident and comfortable about visiting the dentist?
3. Would you like to find a way of letting the experts deal with your dental problems before they get too big?

If the answer is “yes, yes, yes” then the answer…is dental sedation.

In other words, we’ll give you a little something to help you relax. It’s affordable, and it can be used to make most dental treatments a lot easier.

Many of our patients say they can now deal with a visit to the dentist. Sedation takes the stress out of it, they say.

And knowing we’ll be helping can make you feel less anxious before your visit.

Simple inhalation sedation is the answer for most people. It’s usually enough to make a trip to the dentist much less stressful. It’s the same as the “gas and air” given in childbirth. Except the nitrous oxide and oxygen mix – sometimes called “laughing gas” – is delivered through a small nosepiece rather than a facemask.

Intravenous Sedation starts with a small scratch on the back of the hand. You’ll feel calm and relaxed – but you’ll stay awake. And you’ll be able to talk to the dentist. But you probably won’t remember very much.

Deal with your dental problems
If you feel anxious about the dentist, you may have been putting off a visit. With sedation you can deal with dental problems before they become much worse (and much more difficult to deal with).

What is dental sedation?

Intravenous (IV) dental sedation, often known as twilight sedation, is an excellent way to help you relax at the dentist. When you have IV sedation you actually remain conscious, but you will be in that twilight world between awake and asleep. This means that you will be able to respond to our requests yet have no recollection of anything that has happened afterwards. If you have any kind of anxiety about the dentist, then IV dental sedation may be the perfect option for you.

How does dental sedation help?

Whilst IV dental sedation could be used for every visit we tend to only offer it to patients who are exceptionally nervous or for those having long treatments. Typically a patient would have dental sedation when having several dental implants fitted or prepared for a large smile makeover using dental veneers or crowns. The reality is that most patients find our dental practice so relaxing that the use of dental sedation is rare; however if you would like sedation please simply ask us. All dental sedation techniques are administered by our qualified anaesthetic doctors.

Dental sedation is extremely safe and reliable, but there are a few things you need to be aware of:

  • Always come with an adult friend or family member to the practice, you may feel slightly groggy afterwards and we would prefer it if you have someone responsible to help you home

  • Do not drive yourself to the practice as you will not be safe to drive for several hours after treatment

  • Be prepared to take the rest of the day off. Whilst recovery is quick you may still feel slightly sleepy after the sedation wears off

  • I'm having a hard time chewing

Chewing problems can be caused by bad teeth, missing teeth, or poor-fitting dentures. It can be impossible to enjoy your favorite foods with damaged teeth and diseased gums. Many denture wearers also complain of not being able to eat the foods they love and being restricted to a certain type of diet, not to mention the constant worry of losing their teeth in the middle of dinner or conversation.

If your teeth or dentures are affecting your diet and reducing your quality of life, it’s time to see Dr Mickey Frankl. Whether it’s one missing tooth or a mouth in need of complex reconstruction, Dr Frankl has the skills and expertise to bring back your chewing ability and make you feel better about yourself. We provide several implant solutions for missing teeth, including fixed permanent teeth and dental implants.

  • I'm embarrassed to smile

Are you embarrassed to smile because of bad or missing teeth? You’re not alone. Many people hide their mouths behind their hands or smile timidly because they are self-conscious about their teeth. Whatever the reason (neglect, trauma or disease), you don’t have to suffer in silence. You can smile confidently again with the help of New Albany dentist Dr Mickey Frankl.

Dr Mickey Frankl truly understands what it’s like to have dental problems and the embarrassment that goes along with it. Our cosmetic dental procedures are designed to make you look even better over time.

Our clinic provides life-changing cosmetic dentistry and Dr Frankl and his talented team treat problems that range from the simple (failing teeth) to the complex (full mouth rehabilitation).
