Dental problems we can help with
Toothache and dental accidents rarely happen at a convenient time. Here is what we treat as an emergency, and what to do before you reach us.
Toothache
Throbbing or constant pain, pain on biting, or a tooth that reacts badly to hot and cold usually means decay, a cracked tooth or an infection reaching the nerve. We find the cause, get you comfortable and explain the options, which may be a filling, root canal treatment or, if the tooth cannot be saved, an extraction.
Chipped or broken tooth
Keep any broken piece, avoid chewing on that side and cover a sharp edge with sugar free chewing gum. Small chips can often be repaired the same day with composite bonding. For larger breaks we use our CEREC Primescan system to scan the tooth and make a new ceramic crown, veneer, inlay or onlay in the clinic while you wait, so the tooth is fixed properly in a single visit with no temporary and no second appointment.
Wisdom tooth pain
Pain, swelling and difficulty opening your mouth at the back of the jaw usually means an infected or impacted wisdom tooth. We can settle the infection, clean the area and advise on whether the tooth needs to come out.
Lost filling or crown
A lost filling or crown leaves the tooth weak and sensitive. Keep the crown if you have it. We can often re-cement a crown or replace a filling on the day, and if the old crown is lost or broken we can design and make a new one in a single visit with our CEREC Primescan. Do not use household glue.
Knocked out or loosened tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently and put it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Come straight to us; a tooth replaced within the first hour has the best chance of surviving.
Abscess and swelling
A dental abscess is an infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum, and can spread quickly. Do not try to burst it. We drain the infection, relieve the pressure and treat the cause, with antibiotics only where they are needed.
Bleeding after an extraction
Bite firmly on a clean folded gauze or handkerchief for 20 minutes without checking. If it has not stopped after two attempts, call us. Heavy bleeding that will not stop needs A&E.
Cuts to the lips, tongue or gums
Rinse gently with salt water and press a clean cloth on the area. Most small cuts heal on their own; deep cuts, or a cut that keeps bleeding, need to be seen the same day.
When to go to A&E instead
Call 999 or go to A&E for a suspected broken jaw, a heavy blow to the head, swelling that is closing the eye or affecting breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop. For everything else, call us first.
